Strategy Becomes Real in the Field

At Berkley Human Services, we spend a lot of time on strategy – where we compete, how we create value, where we see profitable growth and how we keep strengthening our position as a specialist in human services.

But strategy on its own doesn't move the needle.

Execution does.

That's why Janelle Honda's role as our Chief Commercial Officer matters so much to where we're headed.

Janelle leads our commercial strategy and execution – connecting what we want to accomplish as a business with how we actually show up in the market. That covers distribution, field operations, the broker and customer experience, market positioning and, ultimately, how well we turn opportunity into sustainable growth.

How We Show Up Matters

Janelle often reminds our team that strategy only means something when brokers and customers can see it – in how we respond, how we communicate and whether we follow through.

I couldn't agree more.

We have deep human services expertise, strong underwriting, experienced claims professionals and valuable risk management resources. None of that is a competitive advantage unless our brokers and customers experience it consistently.

That happens in the field.

It happens when an underwriter takes the time to really understand an opportunity.

When we bring the right people into the conversation instead of passing an issue from one department to the next.

When we start renewal conversations early, communicate clearly and do what we said we'd do.

And when we listen to what our brokers are telling us – and use it to get better.

Janelle's job is to bring more focus and consistency to every one of those moments.

Being Intentional About Growth

Commercial execution isn't about chasing more opportunities. It's about pursuing the right opportunities.

Going forward, we're being more intentional about where we spend our time and resources – focusing on the brokers, classes, geographies and accounts where our human services specialization gives us a real edge.

It also means improving the quality of our pipeline and getting the field and underwriting aligned from the very start.

Growth without discipline isn't the goal.

The goal is sustainable, diversified, profitable growth built on relationships where Berkley Human Services can deliver real value.

That starts with knowing where we want to compete, why we can win and what each of us needs to do next.

Listening to the Market and Acting on It

Janelle has also created more opportunities for us to hear directly from the market.

What we hear from brokers is consistent: they want accessible, experienced people, responsiveness, early and transparent communication, and support they can count on when their clients need us most.

That sounds simple. Delivering it on every interaction takes discipline.

It takes clear ownership of relationships, better planning and follow-through, pulling the right expertise together when an account calls for it, and holding ourselves accountable for the experience we deliver.

Feedback is only valuable if we act on it.

Execution Is a Team Sport

Janelle leads our commercial execution, but success in the field doesn't belong to one person or one department.

Underwriting, Claims, Risk Control, Actuarial, Operations, Marketing and our leadership team all shape the experience our brokers and insureds have with Berkley Human Services.

Every interaction either builds confidence in our organization or chips away at it.

That's why execution sits at the center of our strategy.

To me, execution comes down to clear ownership, consistent standards, timely decisions, relentless follow-through and accountability – knowing what we're trying to accomplish and owning the work to move it forward.

Janelle has been instrumental in bringing that mindset to our commercial team and connecting our broader strategy to the decisions being made in the field every day.

Turning Strategy Into Results

Our opportunity is significant.

We have talented people, deep human services specialization and a clear view of the value we want to bring to the market.

The next step is making that value visible – consistently.

That means being deliberate about where we compete. Making it easier for brokers and customers to work with us. Listening carefully, communicating clearly and doing what we say we'll do.

Most of all, it means recognizing that strategy doesn't live in a slide deck or a business plan.

Strategy becomes real through execution

With Janelle leading our commercial organization, that focus on execution will keep shaping how we grow, how we strengthen our relationships and how we deliver for the people and organizations who count on us.
