The Insight Behind Every Decision
Our spotlight on Alex Kapraun, Senior Vice President & Chief Actuary
Meet Alex Kapraun
Senior Vice President, Chief Actuary
Alex Kapraun leads the actuarial strategy that helps shape how Berkley Human Services evaluates risk, manages portfolio performance, and maintains long-term pricing consistency. By partnering closely with underwriting, claims, finance, and distribution, he helps ensure decisions are grounded in data, informed by market insight, and aligned with BHS's specialized focus on human services organizations.
In this Spotlight Q&A, Alex discusses the role actuarial expertise plays in supporting thoughtful pricing decisions, sustainable growth, and the predictable, transparent experience that brokers and insureds value in a long-term insurance partner.
Supporting the details that support the relationship
Q: What is your role, and what does your team do day to day?
A: As Chief Actuary, I lead the actuarial strategy that supports how we price risk, manage reserves, and evaluate portfolio performance. Day to day, my team partners with underwriting, claims, and finance to translate data into decisions that keep our products sustainable and responsive to the human services organizations we insure.
Q: How does your team support clients, partners, or distribution?
A: Our team strengthens the broker and client experience by bringing data-driven consistency to the decisions that matter most—pricing stability, thoughtful underwriting guidelines, and transparent rationale behind changes. The goal is to make BHS predictable and easy to do business with, even in a complex market.
Q: What problems does your team help solve most often?
A: Most often, we help answer “what changed and why?”—whether that’s loss experience shifting, a class of business behaving differently, or a jurisdiction evolving. We identify what’s signal vs. noise and help BHS respond with the right mix of pricing, underwriting posture, and portfolio actions.
Clear judgment in complex situations
Driven by data, guided by discipline, focused on long-term results
Q: How do you approach decision-making in complex or high-stakes situations?
A: I start by separating the decision into what we know, what we suspect, and what we need to validate, then I pressure‑test assumptions with multiple perspectives—underwriting, claims, finance, and distribution. High‑stakes decisions deserve both discipline and clarity: a decision framework, a clear rationale, and a plan to monitor results and adjust quickly if needed.
Q: What guides your judgment when balancing risk, service, and growth?
A: I think of it as a three‑part test: (1) Is it good for the customer long term? (2) Is it good for our partners—clear, consistent, and executable? (3) Is it good for BHS—profitable and aligned to our specialty? When all three are true, growth becomes a byproduct of doing the right things well.
Q: How do cross-functional teams contribute to stronger outcomes?
A: Our best outcomes happen when underwriting, claims, actuarial, finance, and distribution solve problems together—because each team sees different parts of the risk. When we align early, we reduce surprises, accelerate decision-making, and create solutions that are both analytically sound and practical to execute.
Value to clients, producers, and stakeholders
For producers, confidence in a carrier starts with consistency. Alex’s leadership helps ensure pricing decisions are grounded in disciplined analysis, specialized expertise, and a long-term view of the human services marketplace.
Q: What does your approach mean for the people Berkley Human Services serves?
A: For the organizations we serve, our approach means peace of mind: coverage and risk solutions designed specifically for human services, backed by a team that understands their mission and the realities they face. The goal is to help them focus on serving others, knowing their insurance partner is stable, responsive, and specialized.
Q: How does your leadership influence the client or producer experience?
A: I focus on making the experience predictable: stable pricing philosophy, transparent decision logic, and a commitment to learn from outcomes. That creates trust with producers—because they know we’re disciplined, but also thoughtful and willing to engage when a risk deserves a deeper look.
Q: What should partners expect when working with your team?
A: Expect partnership and accountability: we’ll explain our view of the risk in plain language, share the “why” behind our recommendations, and work closely with underwriting and claims to deliver a consistent experience from quote to renewal to claim.
Actuarial Insight built for human services
Human services organizations operate in a complex and evolving risk environment. Navigating that complexity requires more than specialized underwriting—it requires disciplined analysis, market insight, and actuarial expertise that help inform thoughtful decisions across the business.
Q: What differentiates Berkley Human Services’ approach or expertise in the market?
A: BHS is differentiated by specialization: we focus on human services organizations, and we’ve built products, underwriting, claims expertise, and risk resources around the realities of this sector. That specialization helps us respond faster, underwrite more thoughtfully, and support insureds with tools that fit their operating environment.
Q: Why does specialization matter in this segment of the business?
A: Human services risks aren’t “standard commercial”—the exposures, regulatory environment, and claim dynamics are distinct. Specialization matters because it enables better risk selection, better coverage design, and better claims outcomes—ultimately creating a more stable insurance solution for organizations doing critical work.
Q: How does your team remain aligned as the business evolves?
A: Alignment comes from cadence and transparency—shared dashboards and studies, periodic deep dives on emerging trends, and early collaboration before decisions become public. The objective is one voice to the market and one consistent experience for brokers and insureds.
