Underwriting Leadership Built on Experience, Insight, and Consistency

Meet Dani Miller

AVP, Underwriting Production Leader

Strong underwriting requires more than evaluating an individual submission. It requires a clear understanding of the market, careful analysis of each organization’s exposures, and the consistency to make decisions with long-term outcomes in mind.

Dani Miller, AVP, Underwriting Production Leader at Berkley Human Services, brings 25 years of insurance experience, including 20 years focused on the human services sector. She leads a team of underwriters responsible for both new and renewal business, helping agents and brokers evaluate opportunities and identify insurance solutions for organizations serving their communities.

In this leadership Q&A, Dani Miller discusses the role specialization plays in underwriting, how her team approaches complex decisions, and why responsiveness, transparency, and consistency remain central to the BHS experience.

Connecting Expertise to Opportunity

Q: What is your role, and what does your team do day to day?

A: As AVP, Underwriting Production Leader, I lead a team of underwriters responsible for both new and renewal business. Day to day, we analyze risk, evaluate opportunities, and collaborate closely with our agency relationships to deliver the best insurance solutions for our mutual clients.

Q: How does your team support clients, partners, and distribution?

A: My team serves as a primary point of contact for our agents and brokers. We work closely with our distribution team to provide tailored solutions and responsive service. Our goal is simple: make it easy to do business with Berkley Human Services.

Q: What problems does your team help solve most often?

A: One of the biggest challenges we solve is finding a way to say “yes.” The human services space presents many unique exposures, and it can be easy to view an account as outside the box. Because our team understands this industry so well, we are able to identify opportunities to offer competitive terms and pricing while maintaining the strength and integrity of our portfolio.

Delivering clarity when it matters most

Q: How do you approach decision-making in complex or high-stakes situations?

A: I start by eliminating the noise and focusing on the facts and data. Bringing in the right subject matter experts helps ensure we are evaluating all angles and working toward the best outcome for Berkley Human Services. Once a decision is made, we closely monitor the results and are not afraid to pivot quickly when needed.

Q: What guides your judgment when balancing risk, service, and growth?

A: It ultimately comes back to sound underwriting and our long-term strategy. I ask whether a decision supports sustainable growth and strong relationships, or if it is simply solving a short-term problem. Consistency in both decision-making and messaging is critical to building trust with agents and brokers and maintaining credibility in the market.

Q: How do cross-functional teams contribute to stronger outcomes?

A: They are essential. Every department brings a different perspective, and the best outcomes come from understanding how decisions affect the entire organization. Whether it is underwriting, claims, finance, or distribution, collaboration helps us make more informed decisions and better serve agents and brokers.

Built on trust, driven by expertise

Q: What does your approach mean for the people Berkley Human Services serves?

A: Our expertise in the human services sector allows us to make faster, more informed decisions. This strengthens our agency relationships and gives insured organizations confidence that they have a stable, trusted carrier supporting their mission.

Q: How does your leadership influence the client or producer experience and what should partners expect when working with your team?

A: I believe in empowering our underwriting team to make decisions at the desk level. This autonomy helps us provide a best-in-class experience through responsiveness, accountability, and consistency. By holding ourselves to high standards, we deliver both a reliable product and a dependable experience.

Q: What should brokers expect when working with your team?

What sets Berkley Human Services apart

Q: What differentiates Berkley Human Services’ approach or expertise in the market?

A: Human services is all we do. Our entire organization is dedicated to this space, giving us deep industry expertise and allowing us to respond more quickly and thoughtfully across both underwriting and claims. This focus enables us to deliver a level of insight and service that is difficult to replicate.

Q: Why does specialization matter in this segment of the business?

A: No two human services organizations are exactly alike, so a one-size-fits-all approach does not work. Our specialization allows us to make more informed underwriting decisions, better evaluate risk, and serve as a trusted resource and subject matter expert for agents and brokers.

Q: How does your team remain aligned as the business evolves?

A: Communication is key. We operate with a collaborative, flat structure where team members are encouraged to share what they are seeing in the market. This keeps us close to emerging trends and allows us to adapt our strategy quickly as conditions change.

Specialized Expertise. Consistent Service. Trusted Relationships.

Human services organizations face exposures that can vary significantly based on the individuals they serve, the services they provide, and the way their operations are structured. Understanding those differences requires an underwriting team that knows the market and can evaluate each opportunity within the context of the organization’s mission and operations.

Berkley Human Services has remained focused on human services organizations since 1989. Its dedicated underwriting team evaluates risks through a specialized industry lens, supported by responsive decision-making and knowledge across underwriting, claims, and risk management.

Through experienced leadership and a disciplined, consistent approach, Dani Miller and her team help agents and brokers navigate complex opportunities with clarity, responsiveness, and a long-term perspective.
