Leadership perspective & decision-making
Q: What is your role, and what does your team do day to day?
A: I lead our Human Services business, with responsibility for strategy, underwriting discipline, claims adjudication and long-term risk adjusted return to W. R. Berkley Corporations’ shareholders. Day to day, my team focuses on understanding the risks faced by organizations serving vulnerable populations, applying specialized underwriting judgment, driving better claim outcomes and delivering consistent, responsive support to our distribution partners and insureds.
Q: How do you approach decision-making in complex or high-stakes situations?
A: I focus on clarity and fundamentals—understanding the facts, listening to experienced voices, and being disciplined in how we assess risk. In complex situations, consistency and sound judgement matter just as much as speed.
Q: What guides your judgement when balancing risk, service, and growth?
A: Sustainable growth comes from doing the right business well. We balance risk and service by staying true to our underwriting principles while remaining responsive to client needs. Long-term relationships—not short-term wins—are what ultimately guide our decisions.
Clarity in complexity
Q: How does your team support clients, partners, or distribution?
A: We work closely with producers and clients to align coverage and claims solutions with the realities of their operations. That means being accessible, knowledgeable, and decisive—helping partners navigate complexity, respond to emerging risks, and place business with confidence.
Q: How do cross-functional teams contribute to stronger outcomes?
A: The best outcomes come from collaboration. Underwriting, claims, risk management, Finance, Information Technology and Distribution each bring a different perspective. When these insights are integrated early, decisions are stronger and execution is more consistent.
Q: What problems does your team help solve most often?
A: Human Services organizations operate in challenging environments with evolving exposures. We help solve for uncertainty—clarifying risk, structuring appropriate coverage, and providing stable capacity in markets that can be volatile or misunderstood.
Value to clients, producers, and stakeholders
Q: What does your approach mean for the people Berkley Human Services serves?
A: It means predictability, expertise, and strong relationships. Clients and producers know they’re working with a team that understands their sector and is committed to supporting them through both stable and challenging periods.
Q: How does your leadership shape the producer and client experience?
A: I emphasize accountability and responsiveness. Our partners should feel confident that decisions are thoughtful, communication is clear, and commitments are honored.
Q: What should producers expect when working with your team?
A: They should expect responsive, informed dialogue, consistent underwriting, and a team that values relationships as long term rather than transactions.
Differentiation and specialization
Q: What differentiates Berkley Human Services in the marketplace?
A: Our differentiation comes from specialization. We focus deeply on Human Services, which allows us to understand nuances that broader approaches often miss.
Q: Why does specialization matter in Human Services risk?
A: Human Services risks are complex and highly individual. Specialized expertise enables better underwriting decisions, more appropriate coverage structures, and stronger claims outcomes for clients.
Q: How does your team stay aligned as the business evolves?
A: Alignment comes from a clear underwriting philosophy, open communication, and a shared understanding of our role within Berkley’s decentralized model. That foundation allows us to adapt without losing discipline.
