Supporting the details that support the relationship
Q: What is your role, and what does your team do day to day?
A: On the surface, my team manages policies and portfolios to maintain data integrity, ensure regulatory compliance, and organize the critical details that support our underwriters. Beneath the surface, we're investigators, researchers, and the foundation of reliability—providing the insights and accuracy that help drive confident underwriting decisions.
Q: How does your team support clients, partners, or distribution?
A: Our Underwriting Operations team supports our clients by answering questions and helping make certain every policy reflects our insureds’ needs and expectations. We also equip our underwriters with the tools, forms, and reports they need to best serve our clients and partners.
Q: What problems does your team help solve most often?
A: Our team helps keep our policies accurate while resolving questions related to rates, forms, and coverages. If it involves an insured’s policy, our Underwriting Operations team is ready to assist.
Clear judgment in complex situations
Anchored by facts, service, and the right expertise
Q: How do you approach decision-making in complex or high-stakes situations?
A: I focus on the facts that matter most and stay anchored to doing what we do best: serving those who serve others. Everyone has a different skillset, so I bring in the right people quickly, then make a clear call and stand behind it.
Q: What guides your judgment when balancing risk, service, and growth?
A: Good growth starts with good decision-making when it comes to risk. If we can support it well, we move forward. If not, we don’t force it. Long-term results matter more than short-term volume.
Q: How do cross-functional teams contribute to stronger outcomes?
A: They prevent blind spots. When underwriting works closely with claims, compliance, risk management, and IT, decisions are cleaner, execution is smoother, and issues get solved before they turn into problems.
Value to clients, producers, and stakeholders
For producers, ease of doing business is built through everyday service moments: timely responses, accurate policy information, clear answers, and a team that knows the details. Tim’s leadership reinforces those expectations across underwriting operations.
Q: What does your approach mean for the people Berkley Human Services serves?
A: It means consistency and follow-through. The people we serve can trust that decisions are thoughtful, coverage is intentional, and we’ll be around to assist when it matters.
Q: How does your leadership influence the client or producer experience?
A: I’d like to think that my leadership sets the expectation that responsiveness, clarity, and accountability are nonnegotiable. When our teams are supported and aligned, producers experience fewer surprises and faster, more confident outcomes.
Q: What should partners expect when working with your team?
A: Straightforward answers, timely responses, and a team that knows your policies. We value building relationships and show that by being dependable, transparent, and easy to work with.
Operational support built for human services
Human services organizations often operate with layered responsibilities, complex exposures, and unique service models. That complexity makes specialization essential—not only in underwriting, but also in the operational support behind each policy.
Q: What differentiates Berkley Human Services’ approach or expertise in the market?
A: We know the space, and we stick to it. Our underwriting is informed by experience, not guesswork, and our decisions reflect a clear understanding of human services risks—not generic templates.
Q: Why does specialization matter in this segment of the business?
A: Because the risks are nuanced and the margin for error is real. Specialization allows us to price accurately, respond appropriately, and support insureds with coverage that actually fits how they operate—and after 10 years at BHS, I can tell you that no two human services organizations are exactly alike.
Q: How does your team remain aligned as the business evolves?
A: We stay aligned by staying close—close to the data, close to our partners, and close to each other. Being close helps us set and maintain clear expectations, keep in regular communication, and work with a shared mindset that keeps us moving in the same direction as the business grows and changes.
